Our Story

Barn Brats Feral Kitty Shelter is a non-profit (NPO 185-210) feral cat rescue centre started by Zelda Fuka, in loving memory of Gypsy, an angel in cat form. His divine purpose was to bring stray, feral or sick kittens home to be fed and nursed back to health. I shall continue your legacy and carry your memory in my heart. I commit to make a difference in the lives of unwanted and abandoned cats. I promise to not cage or kill. Our kitties will run free, relax and play in the sun. My goal is to humanely trapped, sterilize, vaccinate and provide them with food and warm shelter. Love you Gypsy! R.I.P. You will never be forgotten. You earned your wings.

Gypsy and three tiny kittens were left to die in a black bin bag. They were found by a walker who took them to Onderstepoort Veterinary Hospital. After furher inspection as to why the kittens are not drinking from their mother, they discovered that Gypsy is actually a male. The staff immediately fell in love with him and named him Gypsy. Homes were found for the little ones but they could not find a home for Gypsy. A nurse at OVH phoned my mother-in-law, Vanda Fuka, also a crazy cat lady, and without any hesitation we agreed to adopt him.

Barn Brats Feral Kitty Shelter is a registered Non Profit Organisation (NPO 185-210) and was registered on 14 February 2017. Armed with lots of love, little experience and borrowed traps we started our steri drive. We are currently feeding approximately 40 feral cats and have about a 70 percent spay/neuter/vaccination rate, and our efforts are continuous.

Our goal

To spay/neuter every feral cat in the De Wildt, Pretoria area.

A better world through kindness to animals

Our mission

Is to bring about a time when there are NO MORE Homeless cats. We do this by helping to end the killing in animal shelters through building community programs and partnerships all across the nation. We believe that by working together we can Save Them All.

Guiding principles

  • To treat all living things as we ourselves would wish to be treated.

  • To demonstrate compassion and respect for all living creatures.

  • To judge our effectiveness by the extent to which animal lives are saved and improved, and by the positive experience of the people we touch.

  • To lead by example, developing, promoting and sharing great new ideas and programs to help feral / stray cats.

  • To do what we say we do.

  • To be open and honest in our relationships
